| TOMAHAWK CAMPING!!! Tomahawk has for the second year in a row had over a twenty five percent more kids attend camp (meaning Twilight Camp,Webelos Summer Camp,or a Circle 10 Council Summer Camp) There are a ton of people thank for this great accomplishment, obviously the District Chair,Kevin Carbo for his leadership, and also Michael Comer who is our District Camp Promotions chair. However the recognition should also encompass Angela Marien our marketing and promotions chair and all the unit leaders that emphasis the importance of going camping which helps keep kids in Scouting longer so they can benefit from the program. What I am saying is that there were a ton of people to thank and recognize however by far the biggest impact that happened throughout Tomahawk is our Twilight Camp. Bill Hayden,Wendi Hanna and their staff have worked months and months in preparation for another great twilight camp. It’s because of their hard work year after year that the kids keep coming back. Having a good program last year means that the kids will come back year after year. Bill and Wendi worked extraordinarily hard to make sure our new location was perfect. This included a day of clean up,over 85 Boy Scout volunteers helped for 10 hours making Rorie Galloway park better. These improvements included clearing brush through the trails, building an amphitheater and even installing a flag pole to name the big accomplishments. The camp ran fairly smooth, other then one day of threatening thunderstorms and rain. Bill and Wendi were able to add numerous new program activities, including one of the more popular ones the Dunk Tank. As everyone knows having great leadership for events like this make this event really successful. Thank you Bill and Wendi. FRIENDS OF SCOUTING SUCCESS Because of the great leadership showed by Dr. James Terry and his friends of scouting staff Tomahawk District has raised more money than it has raised in either of the last two years. This great success hasn’t been easy there are numerous people to thank, the top three would be Jon Blount,Greg Noschese and Dr. James Terry. They have worked countless hours and called probably a hundred people each to make sure that we approach everyone. However there was a lot of help from others including Matt Curtis,Gary Bingham,Sam Blount,Mike Hanna and Clinton Davidson. This fundraising is needed more than ever when Tomahawk has sent a record number of deserving kids to Circle 10 camps on camperships.
The Tomahawk District started the summer with a very successful Twilight Camp in a new location. Early June,William Hayden,Camp Director and Wendi Hanna,Program Director, along with tons of other invaluable volunteers gathered at Rorie-Galloway Day Camp in Mesquite for the annual Twilight camp. Each day,Monday through Friday from 4:00-8:30 pm, around a hundred campers and dozens of workers enjoyed the newly updated day camp. There were several stations (including fishing, sports, crafts, games, shooting sports, team building, geocaching, and a dunking booth) that each of the ten dens rotated through each day. The weather cooperated the entire week with no lightening or thunderstorms and several days of a nice breeze. The Rorie-Galloway Day camp was a wonderful change of venue. The Tomahawk District is very appreciative to the City of Mesquite Parks and Recreation Department for the use of the facilities. Summer campers are very excited, either after attending a session of fun-filled camping at one of the Circle Ten Camps,Camp Constantin or Clements Scout Ranch,or in anticipation of an upcoming week at Camp James Ray. Many lucky troops are making the trek across the nation to attend all or part of the National Jamboree held July 26 –August 4 in Virginia. This is event is an opportunity of a lifetime, celebrating 100 years of scouting,a century of the finest outdoor and leadership experience a boy could have! The program will reflect the skills of Scouting-physical fitness, environmental conservation, our national heritage, and the true spirit of Scouting. Some troops will also take advantage of being so close to Washington D.C. by touring the Nation’s capital and visiting historical sites. Regardless of the schedules, memories will be made that will stay with the boys for life. Even those who choose not to go to a camp this summer have been busy. There are several Life Scouts working on their Eagle Projects. It seems that there are several opportunities to help these fine men every weekend. This is a great time to complete these projects because most boys have a more relaxed schedule in the summer. For those weekends that are not filled with camping, scouts can take advantage of an opportunity coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. This July marks the return of all-new episodes of the hit show,Scouting for Adventure,an original series based on the BSA and their flagship magazine,Boys’Life. Airing Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. on the Outdoor Channel. |

| FRIENDS OF SCOUTING 2010 TWILIGHT CAMP PROGRAM PREVIEW
As you prepare for this year, don’t forget about popcorn. The popcorn sale is the best easiest way for your unit to raise funds for upcoming activities and program costs. If you have never taken part in the popcorn sale, then now is the time to get involved. The boys will enjoy selling it and the parents will enjoy the fact that they can reduce the cost of unit activities. For more information about the popcorn sale please contact David Bailey at 214-824-1369 or Mike Denoy at 214-902-6735. ROUNDTABLES DISTRICT COMMISSIONER’S STAFF Why is a Unit Commissioner so important? They are a mentor and friend to any pack, troop,or crew. They are a direct source of information whenever a unit has a question about rules, uniforms, programs, recharters,or advancement. We are looking for volunteers with at least three years of unit experience. It is important to have one unit commissioner for every 3 units. This ensures that every unit can get the attention it needs. For more information, please call Scott Grandjean at 214-367-8267. Training is important for any level of experience and roundtables are a consistent source of training for all volunteers. At every roundtable there is a guidance session for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. However, these sessions are not the only way to learn. When attending roundtable volunteers have a chance to talk and bounce ideas off of each other. So come to roundtable and get some really great training. Please check the calendar or www.whitebuffalodistrict.org for roundtable dates. It is time to start planning the 2010-2011 Scout Year! Program Preview is a key event in helping you plan your unit calendar. Program Preview will be held at Northridge Presbyterian Church on August 12th and will begin at 7PM. You will get dates on all events for 2010-2011. You will also get to meet the White Buffalo District team that makes sure all of the events happen. If you have not been to a Roundtable or any District event, then this is a great way to introduce yourself. For more information about Program Preview contact Mike Denoy at 214-902-6735 or mdenoy@bsamail.org. We would like to thank everyone involved in making Twilight Camp such a success. We would especially like to thank Bill and Sarah Dieterich for returning as Program Directors and creating another phenomenal week. We would also like to thank Mary Kate Akkola,Rick Smith,Nathan Farner,Ledith Blair and Mary Buenrostro. We are currently planning Twilight Camp for next year and we are looking for people to help put it together. If you are interested please contact Grace Davidson at gpdphd@sbcglobal.net. We want to thank every unit that held a Friends of Scouting Presentation this year. Your support is what allows us to continue offering a quality program in the Dallas area. If you have not given to the Friends of Scouting Campaign, then it is not too late!! We need everyone’s help. To make a donation, please contact Mike Denoy at 214-902-6735 or mdenoy@bsamail.org. |
